Seasonal Tips

Cut with a dull mower blade

Mowing

Alternate mowing directions to avoid forming ruts in your lawn.

In hot weather, mow a bit higher (to encourage deeper roots).

Never mow with a dull blade. You can easily remove and sharpen the blade, or you can replace it fairly inexpensively.

Mow the lawn when it is about a third higher than the recommended mowing height.

Leave grass clippings on the lawn, unless the grass has grown very tall between mowings. The clippings will contribute organic matter and nutrients as they break down.

Spring Lawn Care Tips

Take your mower in for service, make sure you include blade sharpening.

Inspect other lawn-care tools. Clean, service, repair or replace them before the rush.

Clean Up winter's leftovers-leaves that fell late, trash that blew in, sticks and limbs that succumbed to winter harsh element debris from beneath bird feeders. Rid planting beds of any dead foliage. Also don't forget to remove sand and salt from pavement areas

Don't forget the spring raking, removing last years dormant and dead grass blades will encourage this years new shoots to grow and help to quicken the spring green-up process. Raking will also help the turf recover from "Snow Mold", Snow Mold causes circular patches in the lawn that appear be gray to straw colored.  Raking away matted grass will help the areas recover.

Prune tree branches, roses, brambles and non-spring-blooming shrub

Do not prune or trim blooming shrubs such as Azalea, Spirea, Lilac or Rhododendron. If you do they will not have flowers this season. Prune or trim after they have flowered.

Cut back ornamental Grasses before new growth begins. Cut to a height of 6 inches.

When Planning to re-mulch ornamental beds think about an Ornamental Bed Weed control, it can cut down on weeding work.
